Another egg sink…

Egg yolkBeing Dutch we love mayonnaise with our chips (and with our roasted potatoes for that matter). Normally we buy our mayonnaise at the Co-Op. It looks like a popular brand as they’ve got shelves and shelves stacked with it… Hellman.

Unfortunately, yesterday we discovered that we had run out of mayonnaise and Wednesday being roasted potatoes day, that was indeed a major disappointment. Then we got a brilliant idea! Let’s make our own…

You need: egg yolks, mustard, lemon juice, salt, pepper and oil (we used sunflower oil). And a mixer. Be careful when adding the oil… It worked out great. Really nice yellow(!) mayonnaise with a lovely taste. Quite different from the white, tasteless stuff you buy at the shop.

One more week…

Well, this is me then at nearly two months now. I think I look a very handsome boy. Only one more week of city life before I undertake the big journey to my new house on Skye. I’m rather excited about it, to be honest…

Handsome looking boy!

The Pound Sterling has dropped quite considerably compared to the Euro over the past months. I heard this through a news flash on BBC Radio yesterday.

What do the experts say? Well, it has to do with the Pound being closely tied to property prices and the recent Northern Rock debacle acting as the match that lit the fire. Although it’s way beyond my capabilities to analyze its impact on daily life, for our personal situation this is not too bad as we still keep a fair share of our savings in Euros…

It’s been almost two weeks now since Roger and Claire have seen pictures of me. None have been sent to the FLICKR album, so they haven’t got a clue as to what a big boy I’ve already become. I feel really sorry for them…

We did it all wrong…

Hugh Fearnley-WhittingstallProbably a lot of people watched Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s program on the cheap chickens you buy at supermarkets - a protest against the intensive chicken farming in the UK. Quite an impressive piece of television. In this program he also experimented with people adopting a couple of free range hens where they would normally buy the cheap chickens at Tesco’s. One of the things he said to them: don’t name your hens, as you become too attached to them and you’ll have great difficulty killing them for their meat. They’re not pets!!

We named our hens, all six of ‘em. And I think they’re amazing creatures. So, what happens when the time comes that they no longer lay eggs. I’m not sure yet. We’ll wait and see…

By the way: we found this program so impressive, we said goodbye to cheap chicken meat. No more.

Army tank?

We’re looking around for a second hand Land Rover. After getting stuck on that degraded road last week we concluded that our current car is probably not the best choice for any off-road expeditions. Someone mentioned to me that the army regularly sells off second hand Land Rovers. So, I did some reconnaissance on the internet and there’s a truly amazing array of vehicles on offer… I’ve seen amphibian vehicles (advertised as “ideal for country shootings”), riot control vehicles, ambulances, and of course a wide selection of modded Land Rovers…

More winter!

Last night was a pretty cold one. This morning everything was covered in hoarfrost and it looked stunning. Claire went out and shot a couple of amazing pictures. As always under close supervision of local wild life: an early seal…

Upset?

Another difficult to grasp word in English: upset. Annoyed, angry, disappointed, distressed…?? Or is it just a convenient word to use when one is - anywhere on a scale from 0 to 10 - not happy with the way things are going… I came across the use of the word upset in - for me - many different contexts… Erm… am I upset?

Upcoming update

January 11, 2008 | 2 Comments |

Not looking forward to it, but the software I use for running this blog has had some important updates. So, that means that I have to tag along one of these days and upgrade skinidin.com as well… I’ll pick a day with truly ghastly weather to perform this feat. The site will probably be unavailable for a couple of hours… Details will follow.

And oh… no mice have tasted my delicious though deadly cheese lumps yet!

White (ish) table

Yesterday we had a tiny patch of snow on Healabhal Mhor, the Gaelic name of one of MacLeod’s Tables. Not very impressive, I agree. I think this is probably as snowy as it gets…
