About

Our houseWelcome to our “Life on Skye” blog. We exchanged a hectic life in Holland for a rural life on the Isle of Skye, one of the islands known as the “Hebrides”, off the west coast of Scotland. Here you can read about our experiences on Skye. If you want, please feel free to leave a comment!

In November 2004 we bought a plot of land and after preparing all things for the build during 2005 (designing the house, getting the necessary permits, finding ourselves a capable builder), the build of our Highland house started end of April 2006 and was finished early December 2006. Click the picture below to see what it looks like.

Skinidin from MacLeod's TableAnd yes, we’re very proud of it! It has 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a separate cloakroom in the hallway, a utility room, a study, a dining room, a lounge and a large kitchen with a separate family area where you can enjoy the view over the ever changing Loch Dunvegan. Although it’s designed as a bungalow, we also have a very large loft area, which is not developed yet but could be transformed into two large double bedrooms.

Our house is located in the small hamlet of Skinidin - it’s even too small to be a village. The house set on 1.2 ha (roughly 3 acres) of land so we have loads of space to ourselves (quite a change compared to our 150m2 “garden” we had in Holland). Check out the map to see the exact location. Close by are the MacLeod’s Tables, impressive flat topped mountains. In 2004 we climbed the north table and took below picture. Our view from the kitchen and the lounge is towards the islands in the middle of Loch Dunvegan.
