Kitchen by Magnet
May 18, 2008
As you can read from our house build blog our kitchen was supplied and installed by Magnet, the Inverness branch to be precise. After about a year of use we noticed one of the cupboard doors hanging all crooked. Upon inspection we found out that the installing joiner had had so many tries at finding the right hole to fit the door, that the screws that hold the hinges were basically hanging loose. Also, the installer had used the wrong screws.
Now, why didn’t you find that earlier on, you might ask? Well, simple. It’s quite a big kitchen with loads of storage space and we only started using this particular cupboard for the past two months and the flimsy installation just escaped our attention.
We reported the flimsy fitting to the Inverness branch of Magnet (really, a monkey would have done a better job here) and we were told that the warranty on the installation and materials had expired. They sent out an inspector a couple of months back but that was it. No more replies from Magnet.
Our conclusion: We bought our last kitchen from Magnet and we advise anybody doing business with them to stay well clear of their installation service (that is, for the Inverness branch). You pay premium money for their installation service while our results are really quite poor. They not only installed that door completely wrong, they also messed up the coving behind the extractor fan and drilled through a couple shelves while installing cupboard lights. After seeing them live in action (a couple of bored kids just from school) it’s a miracle they even got the kitchen in.
Anyway, I feel much better now and will fix that crooked door myself and Magnet is in my “Not-To-Be Used-In-The-Future-Suppliers” binder…

Got something to say?

Hi Roger
I’m not too surprised to learn about your Magnet experience. My brother (in Warwickshire) ordered a kitchen from them last year. It was much more expensive than the one we are having fitted at Kensaleyre (Ashley Ann, Inverness), had less units and quality, if anything, was not as good. The fitter (sub-contracted by Magnet) did a good job under the circumstances. Magnet originally measured the kitchen incorrectly. They delivered the wrong type of oven unit and, initially, failed to deliver a host of items, including the sink, fridge freezer doors, waste bin unit and a wall cupboard. The sink took over a month to obtain, and the freezer stood in the lounge for ages awaiting the doors. They also had to cut a couple of decorative pillars to make them shorter to fit. The join is visible. The job should have taken around 3 days, but ended up taking two months. The staff at Magnet gave the distinct impression of not giving a damn!

Ian
Hi Ian,
Your brother’s experience with Magnet is even worse than ours. Although our dishwasher arrived 2 months late as well as it was “out of stock”. Anyway, a bad experience and we will never use them again.
