New stove

September 30, 2008

We’ve had the first colder days: northerly winds and a rapid drop of temperature. Over the past days we’ve been using our lounge stove as a primary heating source and it works pretty well. So well that we decided to buy a seconds stove for the kitchen which will be installed before the end of October. The only time we need to use oil now is for hot water, but given the efficiency of the boiler that’s not too bad. Probably a tank of oil per year. So for the time being we’ve put aside wild plans for heat pumps. Maybe over time we might reconsider installing solar panels, however they’re still too expensive to warrant a reasonable earn back…

Interesting to see you have installed a log burner and it runs your central heating. We are investigating the very same at present. Would be interested to hear which one you chose and how efficient it is at warming your room and running your central heating. I have read conflicting accounts complete with confusing technical statistics. It would be nice to hear from some one who has first hand experience.

We choose to buy a Aarrow Ecoburn 7 stove but it will not be a central heating source. We’re still “stuck” with our oil based underfloor heating system but as we live mainly in the lounge and the kitchen, that’s where we can save on the oil bill. If I have done my calculations right, we should earn that stove back (including installation cost) within two years, so that’s good. That’s given the current oil prices, and my guess is they’re only going up….

I noticed your post on a big pile of wood which came from the Scottish Forestry Commission……I’m looking for a decent supply of logs and it seems ridiculous to have them driven up from England, these are the only suppliers I can find on the internet.
I have looked at their website but can find no contact details for sales, do you have a point of contact for them…?
    Many Thanks

    Roger,

We’re on Skye (looking at our plot in Glendale again) until Thursday 6th Nov (a.m.) but have no direct contact for you. Any chance of meeting up briefly ?
We need to decide soon on heating systems and would welcome your advice/experience.
